A/R: 25-year-old suspect found dead in Ankaase police cell
A 25-year-old man, Yaw Anokye, has been found dead at the Ankaase police cell in the Kwabre East municipality of the Ashanti Region.
He died two hours after his arrest.
Mr Anokye had been arrested by the police on Sunday, 1 September 2019 around 2:30 p.m. for allegedly stealing a phone.
A woollen carpet was found hanging on the cell gate but the body was found on the floor.
Some wounds were found on his head and body.
He was officially pronounced dead when he was taken to the Ankaase Hospital.
It is not clear how the suspect died but the family suspects he may have been beaten to death by the police. There are, however, suspicions that he may have committed suicide.
The junior brother of the deceased, Mr Kwabena Owusu, told Kumasi FM's Elisha Adarkwah that the police had earlier threatened to beat the suspect when he was arrested, adding that he is not surprised his senior brother died in police custody.
He has pleaded with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the government to initiate an investigation into the death of Yaw Anokye.
The body has been deposited at the Ankaase Methodist Hospital morgue awaiting an autopsy.
