Concerns over financial accountability have been raised regarding the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), with critics questioning how the association manages members’ annual dues of GH¢1,200.

Majority Chief Whip and South Dayi MP, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, who spoke during the Ghana Law Society’s rescheduled press conference on Monday, January 26, 2026, highlighted a growing perception that the GBA has drifted from its original mandate.

Additionally, he refuted allegations that the Ghana Law Society is dominated by lawyers affiliated with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“We are Ghanaian lawyers who have come to the bitter realisation that the Ghana Bar Association has lost its lustre and glamour and, more importantly, its purpose,” he said.

Mr. Dafeamekpor pointed out that while lawyers pay GH¢1,200 annually, there is little or no transparency on how these funds are spent, raising questions about financial governance and accountability within the association.

“Members pay GH¢1,200 every year, yet there is no clarity on how the funds are utilised,” he said.

He further noted that the GBA has failed to provide collective support to members facing professional challenges, leaving many to navigate crises independently. 

“Members have several concerns and crises, but there is no collective intervention from the association,” he said.

The statements come amid broader discussions within the legal community about enhancing transparency, accountability, and member welfare within professional associations.

With the legal fraternity closely watching, the GBA is under pressure to address concerns about financial oversight and demonstrate that it is fulfilling its role in both governance and professional support.
