Kwabena Agyepong vows to scrap retirement age for Supreme Court judges
New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Ing. Kwabena Agyepong, has promised to abolish the mandatory retirement age of 70 for Supreme Court judges if he wins the party’s presidential primary and eventually assumes the presidency.
Agyepong made the announcement on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, while unveiling his six-pillar policy platform ahead of the NPP’s flagbearer contest for the 2028 general election.
As part of his judicial reform agenda, the former General Secretary said he plans to consult stakeholders on capping the Supreme Court at 11 judges while allowing them to serve beyond the current retirement age until they are medically unable to discharge their duties.
“I will undertake stakeholder consultations to introduce a cap of 11 judges on our Supreme Court and abolish the retirement age of 70,” Agyepong said. “This ensures that judges can continue serving based on ability rather than arbitrary age limits.”
He added that the reform would curb the influence of sitting presidents in shaping the composition of the Supreme Court. “I believe this policy will limit opportunities for presidents to appoint favourites and will strengthen the independence of our judiciary,” Agyepong noted.
The NPP is set to elect its flagbearer for the 2028 elections on January 31, 2026.
