The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAiMOS) has intensified efforts against illegal mining in the Tano North District of the Ahafo Region following calls from Dr Gideon Boako, the area’s Member of Parliament, urging swift action to protect the environment and local livelihoods.

Between 5:00 am and 1:00 pm on Monday, January 19, 2026, NAiMOS conducted an intelligence-led operation targeting illegal mining sites polluting the River Bisi, a key tributary of the Tano River. 

The polluted river has severely affected farming communities, including Egya Wuradu Kuro, Egya Antwi, and Nana Etufuwaa Kuro.

The task force dismantled makeshift structures and destroyed galamsey equipment, including heavy-duty water pumping machines, gold washing platforms, generators, welding and pumping machines, and other tools used to facilitate illegal mining. 

Dr Boako had earlier highlighted to the media the urgent need to remove such operations, warning that continued pollution threatens agriculture and the well-being of local communities.

In addition to the raids, NAiMOS engaged local farmers and residents to gather intelligence for future enforcement and to reassure them of sustained efforts to eliminate environmental threats. 

The Director of Operations for NAiMOS emphasised that the Ahafo and Bono Region operations would continue to restore the Tano River and other tributaries, safeguarding the livelihoods of affected communities.

Dr Boako, who has consistently advocated for environmental protection in the constituency, praised the swift response from NAiMOS, urging residents to support the agency’s efforts by reporting any illegal mining activity.
