Counsellor advises anger management in marriages following former NPP candidate’s US arrest
A Ghanaian counsellor and pastor of the Full Gospel Church Lady Gifty Debrah has stressed the need for proper anger management in marriages and intimate relationships following the arrest of former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Klottey Korle, Valentino Nii Noi Nortey, in the United States.
Nortey was arrested in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, after allegedly stabbing his wife during a domestic incident over the weekend. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, January 17, along Mayfair Drive in Lower Paxton Township, left the woman hospitalised.
Police say the victim was rushed to hospital by first responders and is currently in stable condition. Authorities confirmed that Valentino Nortey, 41, of Harrisburg, has been charged with attempted homicide, possession of an instrument of crime with intent to use, and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.
Reacting to the incident, Counsellor, Lady Gifty Debrah of the Full Gospel Church, while speaking on the Class Morning Show on Thursday, January 23, 2026, said many couples enter marriage without adequately addressing critical emotional and behavioral issues.
“Before two people will agree to marry and live together, it takes a lot. Unfortunately, we don't look at the main issue. We only concentrate on the tenet of love, romance and sex,” she said.
Lady Gifty Debrah explained that anger itself is not necessarily negative, but how it is managed can make a critical difference in relationships.
“I want to establish that anger is not bad in its sense. It can be good, it can be bad depending on what you are aiming at achieving,” she noted.
Commenting directly on the alleged stabbing incident, the counsellor cautioned against drawing conclusions without full knowledge of the circumstances that led to the confrontation.
“In the case of our brother and sister in the US, we don’t know what the actual things that triggered the problem are,” she said.
However, she emphasised that calm communication can help prevent conflicts from escalating into violence.
“But I also believe that when there is a soft answer, it turneth away wrath. Whatever the matter was, I believe that if one of them should have taken that posture, it would have helped curtail or stop the partner from doing what he did,” she added.
The case has sparked renewed public discussion on domestic violence, emotional regulation and the importance of counselling in marriages and relationships, particularly among couples facing stress and conflict.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing, while Nortey remains in custody awaiting further legal proceedings.
