Four arrested in lynching of 70-year-old woman accused of witchcraft in North East Region

Police in the North East Region have arrested four individuals in connection with the brutal lynching of a 70-year-old woman, Noah Bilatukin, who was accused of witchcraft and murdered in Sagbani village, near Bunkpurugu.
The suspects — Suuk Jakwa (67), Banyiwoo Ntookwib (32), Moapya Kwayaja (30), and Amos Naji (29) — were arrested on July 14 at their hideouts following intelligence-led operations by the Ghana Police Service.
The incident occurred on July 10, 2025, when the suspects allegedly attacked and killed the elderly woman before fleeing the village.
Police say several other accomplices are still at large, and efforts are underway to bring them to justice.
The suspects are currently under interrogation and will be arraigned before the court once investigations are complete.
In a statement issued by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Robert Anabik Anmain of the Public Affairs Unit in the North East Region, the police condemned the act in the strongest terms and issued a stern warning against the increasing trend of violence against elderly persons under the guise of witchcraft accusations.
“The public—especially in the North East Region—must STOP accusing elderly persons of witchcraft and subjecting them to violence.
Perpetrators will face the full rigours of the law,” DSP Anmain stated.
