The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the Ghana Police Service to immediately arrest and prosecute persons captured in viral videos allegedly assaulting the party’s parliamentary candidate for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako, during the one-week commemoration of the late Ernest Kumi, former NPP  Member of Parliament.

In a strongly worded statement signed by the Deputy National Communications Officer, Godwin Ako Gunn, the NDC said it had lodged an official complaint with the police and expected swift action before Monday, September 1, 2025.

“Failure to do that, the police can trust us to arrest them ourselves and present them to the police on or before September 2, 2025,” the statement warned.

According to the NDC, the party was officially invited to the solemn event on Friday with a gold-plated invitation card. National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia led a delegation comprising national, regional, constituency, and branch executives, as well as Hon. Bernard Bediako Baidoo, to represent the party.

However, their arrival was reportedly marred by violent resistance from a mob who insisted the NDC candidate would not be allowed entry.

The incident, the NDC noted, forced the widow of Ernest Kumi to break down in tears, describing the development as “distasteful” and traumatic.

The party accused supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of orchestrating the attack and cautioned the police against selective justice.

“The police cannot be seen speeding up arrests and prosecutions when it comes to the NDC and being lackadaisical when it comes to the NPP.

We are ready to cooperate with the police from this evening till Sunday evening.

Anything less than this will see us helping them in their duties on Monday and Tuesday,” the statement added.

The NDC further stated that those involved in the attack are well-known in Boadua, Wenchi, Akwatia, and surrounding communities, urging law enforcement to act decisively to avert future chaos.
