Ghanaian arrested in US after shooting 2 family members in 13-hour police standoff

Police in Worcester, Massachusetts have apprehended a 24-year-old Ghanaian man after he shot two of his family members, following a 13-hour standoff with law enforcement.
The incident occurred on Friday, July 7, 2023, at approximately 8:30 in the morning.
Upon receiving reports of a domestic incident involving gunshots, the Worcester Police Department dispatched officers to a residence on Colby Ave.
However, upon arrival, the suspect, a former student of Wenchi Senior High School, had already fled the scene. While speaking to a family member at the residence, officers noticed the suspect outside, seemingly armed with a handgun.
When ordered to the ground, the suspect initially complied but suddenly rose, fired at the officers, and sought refuge back inside the house. In response to the escalating situation, a police team, including the Hostage Negotiation Team, SWAT Team, K9 Unit, drone operators, and a Mobile Crisis mental health clinician, swiftly assembled.
Over the course of approximately thirteen hours, the officers endeavored to coax the suspect out of the residence. Hostage negotiators made repeated attempts to establish contact, while the drone provided crucial aerial surveillance.
The SWAT officers maintained a secure perimeter, with Worcester Paramedics and Firefighters on standby. The suspect fired his handgun at officers multiple times during the incident, prompting officers to return fire.
Finally, around 9:30 PM, the suspect cautiously stepped out of the rear of the residence and was taken into custody with the assistance of a K9 unit.
He received medical treatment from paramedics before being placed under arrest and transported to the hospital. The suspect sustained injuries, including a dog bite and a gunshot wound.
The victims, along with the suspect, were promptly transported to a hospital for medical care. The suspect now faces numerous serious charges in connection with the incident. The motive behind his actions remains under investigation as authorities diligently seek a clearer understanding of the events that unfolded.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment today, July 10, 2023. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
