Police arrest Ablekuma man over suspected counterfeit dollars and illegal firearm

The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has arrested a man at Ablekuma in the Greater Accra Region in connection with the possession of foreign currency suspected to be counterfeit and a firearm allegedly held without lawful authority.

In a statement, the police said the arrest was carried out by the National Operations Directorate Surveillance Unit following intelligence that a self-styled fetish priest in the area was allegedly engaged in criminal activities and was in possession of a firearm, posing a potential threat to public safety.

The suspect has been identified as Josiah Elorm Kwame Amezado.

According to the police, a search conducted in the suspect’s room led to the recovery of several items, including quantities of United States dollar notes in one-hundred-dollar denominations suspected to be counterfeit, a pair of handcuffs, a black vest, a Kuzey A100 blank pistol, and fifty-eight rounds of 9mm blank ammunition.

The police service noted that the suspect is currently in custody and assisting with investigations. Efforts are underway to determine the source and authenticity of the seized foreign currency, as well as the circumstances surrounding the possession of the firearm and other items retrieved.

The police have assured the public that investigations will continue and that further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
