Police officer interdicted for assaulting journalist during Ablekuma North re-run

The Ghana Police Service has taken swift action following the circulation of a viral video showing a uniformed officer assaulting a journalist during the parliamentary election re-run in the Ablekuma North Constituency on Friday, July 11, 2025.
In a statement, the Police Service confirmed that the officer involved has been withdrawn from the ongoing election duties and interdicted.
The matter has been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for a full investigation in line with internal disciplinary procedures.
“The officer concerned has been withdrawn from the ongoing election duty at Ablekuma North and, in line with internal disciplinary procedures, he has been interdicted and referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation,” the statement read.
The Police further assured the public of a thorough and impartial investigation, promising to provide updates as the process unfolds.
The incident, which was captured on video and widely shared on social media, drew public outrage and calls for accountability, after the officer—believed to be of inspector rank—was seen slapping Mr. Kwabena Agyekum Banahene, a journalist with Accra-based Kasapa FM, during a misunderstanding at one of the polling stations.
Media advocacy groups and civil society organisations have since condemned the attack and called for justice for the assaulted journalist.
