Residents of Asuboi in the Eastern Region are living in fear as the Accra-Kumasi Highway continues to claim lives due to reckless speeding on the part of drivers.

Led by their Queenmother, Nana Ama Odeibea Abisesuo III, the community is urgently calling on authorities to construct speed ramps or a footbridge to prevent further tragedies.

She revealed that in one recent incident, about 15 people were knocked down in a single day, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries.

Speaking to Accra FM/CTV reporter Apelete Kofi-Michel, the Queenmother lamented that the situation has become unbearable, citing a recent case in which a Sprinter bus killed three people instantly.

She accused the Ghana Highway Authority, the Department of Urban Roads, and regional authorities of ignoring repeated appeals for intervention.

The Accra-Kumasi Highway, a major link between southern and northern Ghana, carries heavy vehicular traffic.

However, the absence of speed control measures has left pedestrians—especially children and the elderly—at constant risk when crossing to access schools and health facilities.

Some residents have threatened to block the road in protest, but have so far restrained themselves, instead pooling resources for makeshift solutions to slow vehicles down.

Supporting the community’s call, Mr. Joshua Yaw Frederick Lartey, the Ayensuano District Chief Executive, recounted a recent tragedy in which a young girl and her mother were killed while attempting to cross the road.

While urging drivers to exercise caution, he stressed the need for lasting solutions and appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to establish a clinic along the Ayensuano stretch of the highway to provide immediate medical care for accident victims.
