UW/R: Police arrest 9 after mob attacks officers, steals weapons in Saawie
The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has announced the arrest of nine suspects and the recovery of service weapons following an attack on police officers by a group of youth in the Saawie community within the Jirapa Municipality.
The Upper West Regional Police Command effected the arrests after the violent incident, which occurred on Friday, December 5, 2025. According to a police statement, a mob of about 30 individuals assaulted officers who were in the community conducting enquiries, seizing four service weapons and inflicting injuries on the officers.
The Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, swiftly led a reinforcement team to Saawie, rescuing the injured officers and overseeing their evacuation for medical care.
Police confirmed that all four weapons have since been retrieved, though efforts are still underway to recover two missing magazines.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned before court.
“Two of the officers who sustained varying degrees of injury have been treated and discharged, while one officer with a fractured arm has been referred to the Wa Regional Hospital for further medical attention,” the statement added.
The Regional Police Command strongly condemned the attack, describing it as heinous and unacceptable. They assured the public that firm steps are being taken to safeguard police personnel and protect law-abiding residents.
The Command further urged residents of Saawie and surrounding communities to cooperate with investigators and assist with information that may lead to the arrest of the remaining key suspects and the recovery of outstanding items.
