2023 BECE: Private school head commends WAEC for curbing leakages

Dr Francis Essel Okyeahene, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Young Executives School and Onua Francis International School, has expressed appreciation for the efforts of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) in addressing the issue of examination paper leakages during this year's Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
However, he noted concerns about the increasing incidence of cheating despite WAEC's measures.
Dr Okyeahene commended WAEC for its initiatives but expressed worry over the flagging of results for over 22,000 students due to cheating infractions.
He emphasised that the significant number of students caught cheating is alarming and could undermine the progress made by WAEC in curbing malpractices during the examination.
Dr Okyeahene observed that parents engaging in various forms of cheating at home set a wrong example for their children, making dishonesty appear normal in their eyes.
This, the educationist and operator of two leading schools in the Central Region argued, leads to cheating in the exam room.
He cited instances of parents lying about travelling or making false excuses to teachers when it is time for the payment of fees, fostering a culture of dishonesty among children.
During an interview on the Ghana Yesom Morning Show hosted by Odehyeeba Kofi Essuman on Friday, November 24, 2023, Dr Okyeahene highlighted the challenges faced by private basic school operators, emphasising the need for reforms in the sector.
He criticised theoretical teaching methods and called for changes to address the dwindling state of basic school education in the country.
Dr Okyeahene also pointed out the impact of taxes on the private basic school industry, advocating for reforms and realistic salary structures to motivate educators in the private school economy
