Battle of fake doctorates: GTEC orders Kasoa MP to cease using title “Doctor”

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has formally directed the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, to immediately cease using the academic title “Doctor.”
In a letter issued by the Commission, GTEC clarified that Ms. Okunor does not possess the requisite academic qualifications or accreditation to bear the title.
The directive follows concerns raised by members of the academic community and the public regarding the legitimacy of her use of the honorific.
According to GTEC, the decision aligns with the Commission’s mandate to uphold standards within Ghana’s tertiary education space and to protect the integrity of academic titles.
The Commission emphasised that only individuals who have earned doctoral degrees from accredited institutions are permitted to use the title "Dr." in official and public communications.
While details of the specific circumstances leading to the directive were not disclosed, GTEC urged public figures to adhere strictly to ethical and academic standards to maintain public trust.
As of the time of this publication, the MP has not issued a formal response to GTEC’s directive.
