Experts urge government to prioritise teacher training in digital education

Educators, innovators, and policymakers gathered in Accra for the launch of Learnairium, a cutting-edge digital learning platform that aims to redefine classroom learning across Ghana.
The event marked more than just a tech unveiling — it sparked a conversation about the future of education and the urgent need to prepare teachers for the digital age.
Learnairium integrates AI-powered tools, interactive debate forums, and hands-on resources to prepare students for the digital world. But the spotlight did not remain solely on students.
Speakers at the event turned their attention to the pivotal role of teachers, stressing the urgent need for comprehensive digital literacy among educators.
Richard Osei-Anim, Managing Director of Coral Reef Innovation Africa, praised Learnairium as a step toward inclusive education, citing the impact of similar initiatives in over 700 schools through partnerships with the Ghana Education Service (GES).
Without adequately trained teachers, digital transformation risks leaving entire classrooms behind, Oko Tetteh of Education 4.0 warned, urging the government to prioritise teacher training alongside student support.
Awo Aidan, founder of Child Online Africa, challenged prevailing anxieties about screen time.
She emphasised that the real issue was not the presence of screens but the absence of meaningful, learning-oriented content.
"What matters is the intention behind the screen," she noted.
Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, commended the initiative and emphasised the importance of strategic partnerships in ensuring that no child was excluded from Ghana’s digital transformation.
