The Gomoa West District Assembly has taken a major step toward improving educational leadership and learning outcomes with its maiden two-day Leadership and Management Training Workshop for headteachers.

Held from October 23 to 24, 2025, at the District Assembly Hall in Apam, the workshop was themed “Building Leadership Capacity for School Improvement and Effectiveness in Ghana: Responses of the Gomoa West Education Directorate.” It brought together headteachers from all public basic schools across the district.

Opening the event, District Chief Executive Alhaji Mohammed Kassim reflected on his personal journey from classroom teacher to public servant. He urged participants to embrace continuous learning and service, emphasising that “leadership is a call to serve”.

He commended the headteachers for their dedication to nurturing young minds and driving positive change in schools.

Facilitators from the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) led interactive sessions on instructional leadership, school governance, resource management, and stakeholder engagement — providing both academic insight and practical tools for school improvement.

The workshop also provided a platform to showcase the assembly’s ongoing interventions in the education sector, including:

* Deployment of National Service personnel to schools facing teacher shortages.

* Construction of new classroom blocks in Olefreku, Enyeme, and Simbrofo.

* Procurement of furniture to enhance pupil comfort and participation.

* Regular capacity-building initiatives to strengthen leadership and professional development.

Looking ahead, the Gomoa West Education Directorate announced plans to extend future training to headteachers of private schools and include basic schoolteachers in upcoming capacity-building programmes — ensuring a more comprehensive approach to school improvement.

The workshop ended with renewed enthusiasm and collaboration among participants, as the district reaffirmed its commitment to promoting effective school leadership and quality education.

With continued support from the assembly, the education directorate, and other stakeholders, Gomoa West is positioning itself as a model district for educational excellence in Ghana.
