Akosombo Dam: VRA to begin control spillage in the coming days

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has issued a cautionary notice to residents downstream of the Akosombo and Kpong dams, urging them to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures in anticipation of a controlled spillage in the coming days.
This action is being taken in response to a consistent increase in water levels in both dams due to recent continuous rainfall.
In a press statement dated September 12, 2023, issued by the Corporate Affairs and External Relations Unit of the VRA, the following message was conveyed:
"The Volta River Authority (VRA) wishes to inform the general public that it has observed a consistent rise in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo dam. In accordance with our Emergency Preparedness Plan and Standard Operating Procedures, the Volta River Authority has duly notified key stakeholders of this development."
The statement further indicated that the current reservoir level suggests the possibility of commencing controlled spilling in the coming days, should the situation persist.
In light of this, the VRA has taken the responsible step to caution all residents living along the Volta River and downstream of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams. They are advised to be prepared and take necessary precautionary measures to ensure their safety and protect their property.
The VRA also assured the public that they will continue to closely monitor the situation, collaborate with key stakeholders, and provide regular updates.
