Anti-gay bill'll be passed before recess – Alban Bagbin assures Ghanaians
The Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Bagbin, has assured Ghanaians that the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill will be passed before the Hiuse goes on recess.
Tensions emerged when the scheduled consideration of the bill did not take place, leading to accusations directed at the Chairman of the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, Anim Adu Antwi of filibustering.
Addressing the concerns, the Speaker clarified that the consideration stage of the bill was informal, urging members not to introduce formalities like a quorum.
Despite the recent controversy surrounding the bill's progress, the Speaker expressed confidence in its eventual passage and warned against challenging his authority in the matter.
The upcoming week in Parliament is anticipated to be busy, with committees focusing on the consideration of estimates and establishing a timetable for report presentations.
The Speaker emphasised the urgency to conclude key bills and resolve standing orders before the recess scheduled for Friday, 22 December 2023.
