Asanko Gold community conflict: Lands Minister consoles bereaved family, vows transparent investigations

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (MP), has visited the family of a local Assembly Member who lost his life during a violent clash between military personnel and community members at the concession of Asanko Gold Ghana Limited in the Ashanti Region.
The visit, which took place on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, formed part of the government’s broader effort to calm tensions and reassure affected communities after the September 9 confrontation.
Speaking to grieving relatives and sympathisers, Mr. Buah expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, describing the late Assembly Member as a respected and committed leader.
“I am deeply sorry for your loss and I share in your pain,” he said.
“Government will ensure thorough investigations into this incident, and those responsible will be held accountable.
The President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, also conveys his heartfelt condolences.”
According to community accounts, the confrontation arose after youth, angered by what they perceived as a lack of development support, encroached onto the mining concession.
The company reportedly called in military reinforcements, whose intervention escalated into a fatal shooting.
Following his visit to the family, Mr Buah held discussions with Asanko Gold’s management.
He urged the company to strictly comply with mining regulations, strengthen its community engagement, and treat local development as a priority.
He further emphasised the government’s commitment to bridging the divide between the company and host communities in pursuit of lasting peace.
The Minister was accompanied by senior officials from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Minerals Commission, and the rCOMSDEP Secretariat.
