Buipewura Jinapor II appeals for ceasefire in Bawku to aid Asantehene’s mediation efforts

The Vice President of the National House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of the Buipe Traditional Area, Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor II, has called on the Overlord of Mamprugu, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, to use his esteemed position to facilitate an immediate ceasefire in Bawku.
This, he said, would allow for a smooth and amicable mediation process led by His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene.
Buipewura Jinapor II made this appeal during a courtesy visit to the Nayiri’s palace in Nalerigu, as part of his nationwide ‘Thank You Tour’, expressing gratitude to traditional leaders following his election as Vice President of the National House of Chiefs last year.
During his visit, he also called on the Kusasis in Bawku to put down their weapons and embrace peace, stressing that the protracted chieftaincy conflict has hindered development in the area.
The Buipewura reminded the Mamprugu Overlord of the longstanding bond between the Gonja and Mamprusi people, dating back to the 16th century through the historic ‘Nakpa Alliance’—an agreement led by Kumpatia of Gonja and Naa Gbewaa, the founder of the Mamprusi Kingdom.
According to him, this pact was established to resist external expansion, promote trade, and cultural exchange, and strengthen peace between the two kingdoms.
He emphasized that the Gonja and Mamprusi people have since nurtured strong social ties and cooperation, which should serve as a foundation for resolving the Bawku conflict.
Buipewura Jinapor II further noted that President John Dramani Mahama’s ‘Reset Ghana’ Agenda, with a special focus on economic opportunities in Northern Ghana, deserves full support.
He highlighted agricultural development as a crucial area for investment in the broader vision of national transformation.
In response, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga assured Buipewura of his full support for the Asantehene’s efforts to bring lasting peace to Bawku.
He also expressed satisfaction with Buipewura Jinapor II’s call for both factions to disarm in the interest of peace and stability in the region
