Dam spillage: Gov’t to build 1,000 housing units for victims – Oppong Nkrumah
The government has begun the construction of 1,000 housing units for victims displaced by the Akosombo Dam spillage, Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has announced.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Monday, 30 September 2024, the minister underscored government's dedication to easing the suffering of the affected communities.
Mr. Oppong Nkrumah further revealed that phase two of the housing project has been approved, with an additional 1,010 units to be built.
The commencement certificate for this phase has been secured, and the government is in the process of finalising necessary approvals from the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) and securing land for the project.
“Now already, 115 housing units are under construction and they have gone past the 60 per cent mark. These are the units I broke ground for in April 2024. We have also approved phase two of 1,010 units and have received the commencement certificate for this phase,” the minister stated.
The spillage of the Akosombo Dam, which occurred in October 2023, wreaked havoc across communities along the Lower Volta Basin, displacing approximately 88,000 people and destroying over 5,000 homes.
