Dr Grace Ayensu saves sight of 62; hundreds get free medication after screening

The benevolence of Dr Grace Ayensu has saved from total blindness 62 elderly cataract patients who badly needed surgery.
Hundreds, have also been diagnosed and gifted medical glasses.
The initiative sponsored by the aspiring NDC Parliamentary candidate for Essikado Ketan constituency, Dr Grace Ayensu, a general surgery specialist, forms part of her ongoing philanthropic work.
Most of the beneficiaries were the aged, many of whom are in their late sixties and seventies, who hardly earn income or are surviving on pension.
The eye screening exercise held at Essikado attracted over a 1,000 people who were assessed and given free glasses and other forms of medication.
Dr Grace Ayensu who contested the constituency’s seat in the 2020 elections, footed the bill for accommodation and feeding for the two days that the patients were to undergo further examination for surgery to treat the cataract.
“We are elated about the high level of participation.
“I did not expect that such a huge number of our old men and women are virtually blind and needed urgent help. Bussing them for immediate surgery and restoring sight warms my heart and I am grateful to God and my entire team for the support,” Dr Grace Ayensu said.
One of the beneficiaries, Ato Kwamena, a 75-year-old former fisherman who was almost in tears after his sight was restored shared his painful experience about difficulty in moving at night in his neighborhood because of poor sight.
“Sometimes, our grandchildren abandon us. It’s either you hear footsteps and you plead with someone who knows you to carry out an errand or give up till daybreak. May God bless this kind heart,” he added in appreciation of the gesture.
Aside periodic health screening exercises, Professor Grace Ayensu-Danquah has built a mechanised borehole for the Essikado community. The gesture which is intended to mitigate the water crisis in the area also benefits residents of nearby communities including Ngyresia and Mpeasem.
She is currently funding other development projects including an ultra-modern conference center. The project, which is currently near completion will be equipped with a pharmacy, dialysis center, conference center, speakers, projectors, screens, offices, shops, wheel chairs, kitchen, toilet facilities, an events center, a guest house and public space.
