Ghana Forum calls for protection against internet shutdowns ahead of Dec. 7 polls

With Ghana’s general elections approaching in December, stakeholders are urging the government to commit to safeguarding internet access and preventing any potential shutdowns during the electoral period.
This appeal was voiced at the National Integrity Forum, a key event in the Digital Rights and Elections in Africa Meetings (DREAM), held in Accra on October 30, 2024.
The forum brought together representatives from Civil Society Organizations, government, political parties, and media, all emphasizing the essential role of unrestricted internet access in promoting a transparent and democratic electoral process.
Participants warned that any internet restrictions could erode public trust and compromise the integrity of the elections.
Khadijah El-Usman, Regional Lead for Paradigm Initiative in Anglophone West Africa, highlighted the need for uninterrupted internet access as vital for public engagement and information sharing.
Gbenga Sesan, Executive Director of Paradigm Initiative, underscored the importance of timely information from the Electoral Commission to curb misinformation, which could otherwise spread unchecked during election periods.
The forum concluded with a united call for all stakeholders to prioritize digital rights, affirming that an open internet is crucial for ensuring transparency and public confidence as Ghana heads to the polls.
