Ghana reaffirms commitment to refugee protection at UNHCR session in Geneva
Ghana has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the protection of refugees and the pursuit of durable solutions during the 76th Annual Plenary Session of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Executive Committee held in Geneva.
Representing Ghana at the high-level session, the country’s delegation, led by Minister for Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, emphasised that Ghana remains resolute in upholding the ideals of the Global Compact for Refugees (GCR) and continues to champion sustainable interventions that support both refugees and host communities.
In a statement delivered during the plenary, the Minister highlighted Ghana’s progress in collaboration with countries of origin to ensure the effective implementation of all aspects of durable solutions, including their legal dimensions.
Ghana’s ongoing partnership with the UNHCR was also underscored, particularly through the Ghana Refugee Agribusiness Sustainability Programme (GRASP) — a flagship initiative aimed at creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for refugees and their host communities.
Furthermore, Ghana has strengthened cooperation with neighbouring countries to develop a sub-regional strategy focused on reinforcing national security, ensuring refugee protection, and facilitating durable, cross-border solutions.
In concluding remarks, Ghana extended commendation to the outgoing UNHCR High Commissioner, Mr. Filippo Grandi, for his exceptional leadership and steadfast dedication to protecting the rights and dignity of refugees worldwide.
The reaffirmation of Ghana’s commitment at the UNHCR Executive Committee underscores the nation’s long-standing tradition of hospitality, humanitarianism, and leadership in promoting peace and stability within the sub-region.
