Ghana signs milestone nuclear cooperation agreement with U.S. at US-Africa Summit
Ghana inked a historic nuclear cooperation deal with the United States-based Regnum Technology Group, marking a significant advancement in the country's pursuit of nuclear energy as a major component of its national energy mix.
According to Collins Adomako Mensah, the Deputy Minister of Energy, the deal, which was announced during the second United States-Africa Nuclear Energy Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, is a major step towards bolstering energy security in Africa.
Regnum Technology Group has promised to purchase a portion of the electricity produced and will look for funds to build the nuclear facility.
During his speech at the summit, Mr Adomako Mensah declared that "energy is the heartbeat of every economy" and emphasized how vital it is for Africa to have access to enough electricity to enable social and economic development.
He claimed that in the absence of sufficient energy, the wellbeing of people on the continent would be at jeopardy and that “It’s important that the African continent has enough of it to support economic and social development and to enhance the welfare of its citizenry.”
Mr Adomako Mensah noted that Ghana has been meticulously preparing the addition of nuclear power to its energy mix since 2005, realizing that it is an essential step in the nation's energy transition.
The U.S. reaffirmed its commitment to support Ghana in positioning itself as a regional training hub and Center of Excellence for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in the Sub-Saharan African region, the Deputy Minister informed the summit, highlighting a recent development in this journey.
