I’m not an LGBTQI+ advocate; I’m a Lawyer and my wife is the best for me – SC nominee
Supreme Court nominee Prof. Richard Frimpong Oppong has refuted claims that he supports LGBTQI+ activities in the country.
Prof Oppong addressed the issue during his appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Tuesday, 13 August 2024.
The concerns stemmed from a confidential National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) report cited by Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, which suggested that Prof. Oppong, described as a libertarian, might focus on surrogacy and LGBTQI+ rights if appointed to the Supreme Court.
Prof. Oppong responded to the claims with a categorical denial, asserting that the report’s suggestions were unfounded and did not reflect his views.
“Absolutely wrong, and I reject in the strongest possible terms wherever those views are coming from,” Prof. Oppong stated.
He continued that: “As an academic, I have written about the subject from the perspective of my specialty—from the perspective of conflict of laws. I have my wife here, I have my three daughters here; actually, they will be very surprised that anybody thinks that I am going to inflict LGBTQ on the country.”
The issue was further explored by Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, who questioned Prof. Oppong on his stance.
In his response, Prof. Oppong emphasised his role as a legal professional and distanced himself from the allegations.
“I am a lawyer; I am not an anthropologist, I am not a sociologist…from a personal perspective, I am married, my wife is here, and I know whatever she is giving me is the best [power] for me,” he clarified.
