Judiciary records highest number of retirees in a year, as 20 judges, magistrates hang gowns

In a historic event, 20 judges and magistrates from various levels of the Judiciary, including four Supreme Court justices, have officially retired from service.
This figure marks the highest number of judicial officers to retire in a single legal year (2022/23) in the annals of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana (AMJG).
The announcement was made during the 42nd annual general conference of the AMJG in Accra by the President of the AMJG, Justice Henry Attorney Kwofie.
Among the retiring judges are four justices of the Apex Court, including: Justice Anin Yeboah, the former Chief Justice, Justice Jones Victor Dotse, Justice Nene Amegatcher, and Justice Prof Nii Ashie Kotey.
The other retirees include 5 justices of the Court of Appeal, one each from the High Court and the Circuit Court, as well as 9 District Court Magistrates.
All retiring judges and magistrates were duly honoured with citations during the 42nd Annual Conference of the AMJG.
The conference was themed around the importance of the judiciary in Ghana's legal landscape.
President of the AMJG, Justice Henry Anthony Kwofie, said: “This year, 20 of our members in the various hierarchies of the courts have retired or are about to retire after several years of dedicated service to the Judicial Service and the Country.”
He added: “This is the highest number of judges and magistrates ever to retire in one legal year in the history of the AMJG.”
The 2023/2024 Legal year, which commences on Monday, 2 October 2023, is scheduled to end on 31 July 2024.
