Kidnapped Ghanaian church of Pentecost deacon freed

Deacon Emmanuel Cudjoe, who was kidnapped during an armed attack on a Johannesburg assembly of the Church of Pentecost, has been released.

The incident occurred during a live church service when armed robbers targeted the congregation, making off with valuables and cash that belonged to the church members. 

The robbers also abducted Deacon Cudjoe.

In response to the incident, the Church of Pentecost declared a 3-day period of fasting and prayers which began on Tuesday, 31 October 2023. 

However, before the fasting and prayer session concluded on Thursday, 2 November 2023, Deacon Cudjoe was released.

Ghana's High Commissioner to South Africa, Charles Owiredu, confirmed on X that the deacon was freed on Tuesday night and has since been reunited with his family. 

Ghana's High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, had mobilised efforts to ensure the safe and prompt return of a deacon from the Church of Pentecost (CoP) who was kidnapped on Sunday, 29 October 2023, during a church service.

In a statement issued on Monday, the High Commission of Ghana confirmed its collaboration with the Church of Pentecost and the South African Police Service (SAPS) to expedite the release and return of the abducted deacon to his family.

The statement read: "Mission is presently working with the Church in cooperation with the South Africa Police Service (SAPS) to ensure the speedy and safe release and return of the victim to his family."

The High Commission had assured the public that the South African Police Service was fully engaged in the matter, making all necessary efforts to ensure the safe return of the Ghanaian citizen who was taken hostage.

Furthermore, the High Commission offered safety advice to all members of the Ghanaian community in South Africa, urging them to take necessary precautions to safeguard their well-being.

The mission pledged to keep the community informed of any significant developments related to the case.
