Minister calls for review of military enlistment age limit
The Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Mr Sam Nartey George, has called for a national conversation on revising the maximum age limit for enlistment into Ghana’s military and security services, arguing that the current restriction excludes many capable and patriotic citizens who are still fit to serve.
Speaking on the matter on his Facebook wall, the Minister emphasised that Ghana must modernise its enlistment criteria to reflect today’s realities of health, fitness, and opportunity.
“It is time for our beloved nation to re-examine the maximum age for enlistment into our military services,” he said.
“There are people in their 30s who are physically fit and sound enough to serve their nation.
We must not deny them this opportunity simply because of their age.”
Currently, Ghana’s military enlistment process typically restricts applicants to their late 20s, depending on the specific branch or role.
However, Mr Nartey George believes that this policy needs to evolve to match international best practices and make room for more diverse recruitment.
“There is precedent across the world,” he noted. “Many nations have adjusted their recruitment age brackets to include individuals in their early to mid-thirties, recognising that physical ability, discipline, and patriotism are not limited by age.”
He further proposed that an upper limit of 35 years would be fair and inclusive, offering qualified Ghanaians a second chance to serve their country while contributing valuable life experience and maturity to the armed forces.
“An upper limit of 35 years would serve our young people better,” the Minister said.
“Let’s nurture their dreams and not kill them.”
Mr. Nartey George’s call has sparked conversations among policy experts, youth advocates, and veterans, with many praising the proposal as timely and progressive in a country where youthful patriotism and unemployment intersect.
