UE/R: Clashes in Bawku leave 2 dead as chieftaincy conflict reignites

Renewed violence in Bawku has claimed the lives of two people and left several others injured in a fresh outbreak of conflict linked to the area’s long-standing chieftaincy dispute.
Tensions erupted shortly after the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief who had been in exile since his controversial installation in Nalerigu in February 2023.
Alhaji Abagre's return to Bawku, following a Kumasi High Court decision on Thursday, 17 October 2024 that nullified an outstanding arrest warrant against him, has reignited deep-seated tensions in the region.
Residents reported that gunfire exchanges broke out between opposing factions on the evening of Saturday, October 26 2024, leading to casualties and heightened security concerns across the community.
The clashes mark a serious escalation in a conflict that many hoped had reached a fragile calm.
