The Ashanti Region has reported 232 maternal deaths in the first half of 2025, an increase from 153 deaths recorded during the same period in 2024.

The Regional Health Director, Dr Fred Adomako-Boateng, made the disclosure during the 2025 half-year performance review of the directorate.

He noted that most of the deaths reported at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) were referrals from other facilities.

To address this concerning situation, he said the directorate planned to collaborate with KATH to implement a clinical mentorship programme, an initiative aimed enhancing the capabilities of peripheral hospitals, enabling them to manage maternal cases effectively without needing to refer patients to KATH.

He also indicated that the directorate intended to establish a virtual labour room that will allow KATH to monitor women in labour at various peripheral hospitals, a system which will help identify cases that required referrals to KATH.
