AMA boss appeals to NPP to boycott Ayawaso East by-election
The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Mr Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has appealed to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reconsider any plans to contest a by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency of the Greater Accra Region.
According to Mr. Allotey, allowing a non-competitive by-election would serve as a mark of respect for the late Member of Parliament, who passed away at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after a short illness.
Speaking on the matter, the AMA Chief Executive said the death of the lawmaker is a significant loss not only to the constituency but to Parliament and the nation as a whole.
He stressed that politics should give way to compassion and unity during such moments of national mourning.
Mr. Allotey noted that a peaceful and uncontested by-election would honour the memory and service of the deceased MP, while also helping to maintain calm and stability in the Constituency.
He therefore called on the leadership of the NPP to consider the broader national interest and allow the governing party to retain the seat without contest, emphasising that such a gesture would be widely appreciated by the family of the late lawmaker and residents of Ayawaso East.
The Electoral Commission is yet to announce a date for the by-election following the passing of the MP.
