Former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has called on delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to disregard assertions that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia bears responsibility for the economic difficulties experienced during the party’s time in office, maintaining that he is still the strongest choice to lead the party.

She emphasized that it would be unfair to place the burden of the government’s economic shortcomings solely on Dr Bawumia, noting that his influence over major economic decisions was not absolute.

Speaking to a section of party delegates, Adwoa Safo highlighted the significant role played by other senior government figures particularly former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta in determining economic direction and policy.

Her remarks come in response to comments made by some contenders in the ongoing NPP flagbearer race, who have criticized Dr Bawumia for the administration’s economic performance while the party was in power.

The NPP is set to choose its presidential candidate on January 31, 2026, in preparation for the upcoming general elections. Dr Bawumia is among five individuals vying for the party’s top slot, alongside Kennedy Agyapong, former Assin Central legislator; Dr Bryan Acheampong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture; Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Education Minister; and Kwabena Agyapong, a former General Secretary of the party.
