The main opposition National Democratic Congress has dexlared Mr James Gyakye Quayson MP-elect in the Assin North by-election.

Addressing journalists at the constituency around 8 pm, the party’s national communications officer, Mr Sammy Gyamfi, said the results the party collated from its 198 agents from the 99 polling stations give Mr Quayson an unasailable win over his main contender of the governing New Patriotic Party, Mr Charles Opolu.

"... I can announce to you that Hon. [Gyakye Quayson] is the MP-elect for the Assin North constituency", Mr Gyamfi said after introducing the ousted MP to the crowd.

Results that have trickled in so far from 40 out of the 99 oolling stations, put Mr Quayson in the lead.

Mr Quayson's 2020 victory was declared null and void by the Supreme Court, thus, necessitating Tuesday's (27 June 2023) hard-fought by-election.

Apart from Mr Quayson and Mr Opoku, there was a third candidate in the contest, Ms Bernice Enyonam Sefenu, of the Liberal Party of Ghana.
