Boakye Agyarko slams NPP leadership over “reckless” election timetable

A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Energy Minister, Mr. Boakye Agyarko, has launched a scathing criticism of the party’s newly announced internal election timetable, describing it as “strategically unsound, politically indefensible, and organizationally reckless.”
In a strongly worded statement issued on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, Mr. Agyarko spoke out against the decision of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to conduct the party’s flagbearer election ahead of constituency, regional, and national executive elections.
The NEC announced that polling station executive elections will take place on December 6, 2025, followed by the presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, while other key internal elections have been postponed to dates yet to be determined.
The former minister, who is also a flagbearer hopeful, questioned the logic behind selecting a presidential candidate before renewing the party structures that would be responsible for supporting and leading the campaign.
“How does a serious political party plan to elect a presidential candidate before renewing or replacing the very party structures—coordinators, constituency executives, regional and national officers—that are meant to support and drive that candidate’s campaign?” Agyarko queried.
In his statement titled “The Sequence of NPP Internal Elections: A Call for Sanity and Strategic Order”, Mr. Agyarko likened the move to “roofing a building before laying its foundation,” warning that it could lead to internal confusion, disunity, and eventual collapse.
He further challenged the NEC to provide clear answers to critical concerns, including:
What justification exists for reversing the traditional election order?
Which officers will coordinate the flagbearer election in the absence of new leadership structures?
How will outdated executives support a modern campaign?
Is the party sidelining the will of grassroots members for elite interests?
According to Mr. Agyarko, the decision represents a “dangerous departure” from the NPP’s longstanding tradition of bottom-up empowerment and democratic principles.
He argued that the grassroots — from polling station executives to constituency officers — are the lifeblood of the party, and any successful strategy must begin with rebuilding these foundations.
“This sudden reversal of procedure is alien to our political culture and global democratic norms.
It must be said plainly: this is political opportunism masquerading as strategy,” he stated.
Mr. Agyarko called on the NEC and all stakeholders to immediately reverse the decision and return to the established order of conducting internal elections — beginning from the grassroots up to the national level — before electing the party’s 2028 presidential candidate.
“The current roadmap is a strategic suicide note.
Let us not sign it,” he cautioned.
He concluded by urging the leadership to uphold fairness and strategic clarity in order to secure the party’s viability ahead of the 2028 general elections.
