Care Ghan, a civil society organisation advocating for free and fair elections in Ghana, has issued a press release urging the Chief Justice to expedite action on the petition against the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission and her two Deputies.

The organisation's call comes amid concerns about the credibility and impartiality of the Electoral body.

Care Ghana believes that the petition should be heard and determined promptly to ensure that the Electoral Commission can function effectively and impartially.

The removal process, outlined in Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, requires the Chief Justice to determine whether there is a prima facie case.

If established, a committee will be set up to investigate the allegations.

This process has sparked debate about the politicisation of the Electoral Commission and the need for reforms to ensure its independence.

According to the statement, Article 146(8) of the Ghanaian Constitution ensures that affected office holders are afforded a fair hearing and that the inquiry process is conducted in accordance with the rules of natural justice and due process.

In the statement, Care Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to promoting free, fair and credible elections and encouraged all stakeholders to uphold the Constitution, the rule of law, and Democratic accountability.

The organisation called on the Chief Justice to ensure a fair and transparent inquiry process.

The organisation's advocacy for a fair and transparent inquiry process is a significant step towards ensuring that Ghana's democratic institutions remain strong and resilient.
