Lawyer criticizes Bawumia for exploiting religion in his campaign

An Accra-based lawyer, Andrews Appiah Danquah, has accused Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, of exploiting religious sentiments for political gain.
According to Mr Danquah, Dr. Bawumia frequently uses religion to his advantage, despite previously advising Ghanaians to avoid religious and ethnic politics.
Mr Danquah pointed out that during the NPP super delegates’ conference, where the number of aspirants was reduced to five, Dr. Bawumia urged delegates to vote for him as the first Northerner to lead the UP tradition in history. "So who is using region and ethnicity here?" Mr Danquah questioned.
Speaking as a panellist on the Ghana Yennsom morning show on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, hosted by Otafrigya Kaayire Kwesi Appea-Apreku, Mr Danquah, a member of Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change (MFC), criticized the Vice President's inconsistent stance on religion.
He recounted that Dr. Bawumia once stated he was a Christian before converting to Islam, even revealing his Christian name, Timothy, to gain acceptance from Christians.
"Yet at the least opportunity, he tells Ghanaians to eschew religious politics," Mr Danquah noted.
He highlighted Dr. Bawumia's recent comments during the Eid al-Adha festivities, where the Vice President urged Ghanaians to vote based on ideas rather than religion.
Mr Danquah also criticized Dr. Bawumia’s economic management, pointing out that under his leadership as head of the Economic Management Team, the Cedi depreciated from three Cedis to a dollar to sixteen Cedis to a dollar.
"What ideas does this man have to offer?"Mr Danquah asked, arguing that Dr. Bawumia's campaign is confused and urging Ghanaians to reject him in the upcoming elections.
He added that Dr. Bawumia's economic policies have led to hardships, such as the high cost of essential items like pepper.
"What ideas again when you have failed the economy, leading to people now buying pepper when pepper not too long ago was an added-on?" Mr Danquah concluded, calling for a vote against politicians who he believes have failed the country
