Mahama backs Speaker Bagbin's retension in 9th Parliament

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has directed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary leadership to nominate Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as Speaker of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
The decision, taken in consultation with the party’s National Executive and Parliamentary Leadership, underscores the NDC’s commitment to leveraging Bagbin’s extensive parliamentary expertise to strengthen the legislative arm of government.
Rt. Hon. Bagbin, a veteran legislator, has had an illustrious career in Parliament, serving as Minority Leader, Majority Leader, and, most recently, Speaker of the 8th Parliament.
His tenure has been widely praised for advancing legislative reforms and enhancing parliamentary governance.
President-elect Mahama expressed confidence in Bagbin’s ability to lead Parliament during this critical period in Ghana’s democratic history, emphasizing that his leadership will bolster the institution’s capacity to perform its oversight and legislative functions effectively.
If elected, Rt. Hon. Bagbin will make history as the first Speaker to be retained since 2020 and only the second to be retained in the Fourth Republic, reaffirming his pivotal role in Ghana’s parliamentary evolution.
