Vice President at Local Gov't Ministry

The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, led by Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, continues to advance the government’s decentralisation agenda, bringing governance closer to the people and improving service delivery nationwide.

During a visit to the Ministry yesterday by the Vice President Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the Minister briefed stakeholders on significant achievements since assuming office.

Among these were the successful orientation of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), with clear guidelines provided for the effective use of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).

The Ministry also highlighted the National Decentralisation Dialogue, which has offered a platform for stakeholders to shape the next phase of Ghana’s decentralisation journey.

The Minister further emphasised efforts to strengthen collaboration with traditional authorities, noting increased engagement with chiefs and queen mothers.

In a major development, allowances for paramount chiefs and queen mothers were increased by about 300 percent, underscoring the government’s recognition of the critical role of traditional leadership in promoting unity, development, and local governance.

In addition, the Ministry announced the launch of National Sanitation Day work plans, marking the rollout of a 24-hour sanitation programme aimed at improving public hygiene across the country.

Hon. Ibrahim noted that these initiatives have boosted confidence among investors and development partners, reflecting growing stability and clear direction under the current administration.

The Vice President praised the Minister's efforts in ensuring accountable utilisation of public funds, particularly DACF disbursements, and reaffirmed that decentralisation is a vital tool for enhancing the daily lives of Ghanaians.

In his remarks, the Vice President emphasised that governance is a collective responsibility and urged continued collaboration with stakeholders at all levels to strengthen institutions and achieve better outcomes for communities nationwide.
