NIA card ECOWAS card not Ghana card – Sorogo
A former Member of Parliament for Madina, Mr Amadu Sorogo, has said the current national card being issued by the National Identification Authority (NIA) cannot be described as a Ghana card limited to only Ghanaians.
The card, he said, is an ECOWAS card which has been translated into the French language for all French-speaking people.
He has, therefore, told the Electoral Commission that it cannot rely on that card to compile a new register of voters.
Speaking on the Ghana Yensom show on Accra100.5FM on Tuesday, 19 May 2020 in connection with plans of the EC to use passports and the Ghana card as the only primary documents in compiling a new register, Mr Sorogo said: “Birth certificate is the primary authority to tell that one is a Ghanaian and, so, why do we want to deceive ourselves?”
“The card being issued by the NIA is not a Ghana card. We don’t have Ghana card. What they are issuing is called ECOWAS identity card.”
Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional 1st Vice-Chair of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Omar Bodinga, who was also on the show, said the Ghana card is an important document that assists Ghanaians in whatever they do.
He said the card will propel development as it will contain almost every information about an individual.
“This is an important document that we must all accept,” he said.
