Napo punches NDC over alleged vigilante group, urges Ghanaians to choose peace

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Vice Presidential Candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has condemned the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for launching a vigilante group on the same day that the nation launched its National Peace Campaign ahead of the 2024 elections.
Speaking at a community engagement in Duadaso in the Jaman North Constituency, Dr. Prempeh expressed strong disapproval of what he called a disregard for peace by the NDC, urging Ghanaians to “vote wisely” for a party that values national harmony.
Dr. Prempeh, popularly known as “Napo,” said the NDC's actions reflect their lack of concern for the welfare and development of ordinary Ghanaians.
He accused the NDC of prioritizing electoral victory over peace, alleging they would even risk national stability to achieve their aims.
As evidence, he cited the NDC’s recent launch of a group called the “Ashanti Region Azorka Boys,” which he described as a vigilante outfit, despite Ghana’s anti-vigilante law prohibiting such organizations.
Napo also referenced past statements by the NDC’s Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama, who has previously spoken about the NDC’s revolutionary roots and the party’s strength in mobilizing for causes, including those requiring force.
Dr. Prempeh assured Mahama that the NPP remains committed to peace and will compete on ideas, not violence.
During his campaign, Napo also visited the Berekum West Constituency, where he met with the chiefs and people of Jinijini.
He emphasized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s dedication to working closely with traditional authorities to foster local development and nation-building.
He pledged that a future Bawumia-led administration would prioritize the welfare of traditional leaders, recognizing them as vital partners in governance.
As part of his visit, Dr. Prempeh fulfilled a prior commitment to the Berekum Traditional Council by presenting a bus on behalf of Dr. Bawumia.
This gift, requested during a previous campaign tour, is intended to enhance the mobility of the traditional council and support them in their roles within the community.
The Chief of Jinijini, Nana Asare Baffour, expressed gratitude to the NPP, acknowledging the significant development brought to the district since its establishment seven years ago.
Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Kwaku Agyenim Boateng, also addressed the gathering, underscoring the NPP’s commitment to local progress and urging continued support for the party.
