Private legal practitioner and historian, Yaw Anokye Frimpong has sparked controversy after alleging that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, has been spiritually cursed for speaking against Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Speaking on Accra FM's Citizen Show hosted by Nana Otu Darko, the lawyer argued that Nkrumah is not just an ordinary historical figure but a revered personality whose legacy must be respected by all leaders, especially younger politicians. According to him, disrespecting elders and national icons carries serious consequences.

He claimed that during Napo’s outdooring as a running mate in Kumasi, the former Energy Minister made remarks that appeared to belittle Dr Kwame Nkrumah, which he believes invoked a spiritual backlash.

“Kwame Nkrumah is bigger than the NPP and bigger than any individual.

The name Nkrumah is like a deity.

You cannot disrespect someone older who paved the way for you,” he said.

Yaw Anokye Frimpong further referenced cultural and biblical principles, noting that elders and first leaders deserve honour because they lay the foundation for others to follow.

He added that many past Presidents, including former President John Agyekum Kufuor and President Nana Akufo-Addo, showed respect to Nkrumah by honouring his legacy through national projects such as the renovation of the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and the Ghana @ 50 celebrations.

He questioned why Napo would single out Nkrumah for criticism despite his significant contributions to the country’s development, including institutions like the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, KNUST, and several major schools in his home region.

According to the lawyer, the alleged “spiritual curse” could negatively affect the fortunes of any political ticket Napo is attached to.

He therefore advised the NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, not to consider him again as a running mate.

“If Bawumia brings him close again, it could affect him.

He should rather choose someone like Bryan Acheampong or Adutwum,” he suggested.
