Only citizens can determine who leads them, not the EC – Jean Mensa

Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has reiterated that the power to elect Ghana’s next president rests solely with the people, and not the Commission itself.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Friday, 20 September 2024, she emphasised that the EC’s role is to facilitate the election process, not to determine its outcome.
“We as a commission do not have the power to determine who wins elections. It is not in our control to determine the outcome of the election," the EC Chair clarified.
She stressed that the authority to choose a president lies exclusively in the hands of Ghanaians, reaffirming the importance of voter participation in shaping the country’s leadership.
"It is only the citizens, and the citizens alone, who can determine who should lead them, not the EC," she continued.
She added: "It is the candidate who is given the power to lead by the citizens who will be declared president of the Republic of Ghana by the EC come the 7th of December 2024."
