Dr. Kwasi Amakye Boateng, a Political Science Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has suggested that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is becoming increasingly anxious about losing votes in the Ashanti Region to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dr. Amakye Boateng noted that while the NPP government has completed various projects, it has not delivered substantial development specifically for the Ashanti Region, especially in Kumasi.

He contrasted this with the efforts of former President John Mahama, who spearheaded the construction of the Kumasi Kejetia Market, a major project that has benefited the area.

According to Dr. Amakye Boateng, “It is obvious that the Ashanti Region provided great support to the New Patriotic Party, but it seems they were denied their fair share of the cake.

Accra now has three new interchanges, but Kumasi doesn’t even have a single interchange.”

He further explained that the NPP’s recent efforts to build roads in Kumasi appear to be a last-minute attempt to address the region’s needs in light of the upcoming elections.

“Now the NPP is panicking because the NDC might acquire more votes.

They have now realized their errors, but it is John Mahama who constructed the Kumasi Kejetia Market, yet the Ashanti Region didn’t vote for him,” he added.

Dr. Amakye Boateng also addressed the significance of campaign messaging, asserting that accidentally mentioning an opponent's name during campaigns is unlikely to impact election outcomes as these are “just mere mistakes.”

Additionally, he expressed concerns about the practice of distributing money or food items to win votes, warning that such tactics undermine the country's democratic progress. He emphasized the importance of genuine engagement with voters to foster a mature political landscape in Ghana.

He spoke in an interview on Adom FM.
