Vice President chairs Inter-Ministerial Committee meeting on decentralisation
Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, on Wednesday, December 10, chaired a meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee (IMCC) in Accra as part of renewed efforts to advance the government’s decentralisation agenda.
The meeting focused on reviewing progress and addressing challenges in the implementation of the National Decentralisation Policy and Strategy for 2026–2030.
In her remarks, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang reaffirmed the government’s commitment to deepening local governance, stressing the urgency of comprehensive reforms within key sectors such as health and education.
She noted that although major gains were recorded between 2010 and 2016, several critical reforms remain outstanding, with direct implications for service delivery and public confidence.
A new policy and strategy document for 2026–2030 was presented to the committee, outlining six priority areas of reform: political, administrative, fiscal, economic, and popular participation.
The Vice President emphasised that the successful implementation of the new strategy will require strong political will, collective ownership, and effective alignment across all sectors.
She underscored the importance of ensuring predictable fiscal transfers, strengthening local revenue systems, and integrating decentralisation objectives into the broader national development planning framework.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang further called for coordinated and sustained leadership among Ministries, Departments and Agencies, urging them to recommit to their roles in driving the decentralisation process.
She expressed confidence in the ministers’ readiness to work closely with the Decentralisation Secretariat to accelerate ongoing reforms
