Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has paid tribute to members of the Ghana Navy who lost their lives in service to the nation, describing their sacrifice as a cornerstone of Ghana’s peace and stability.

She was speaking as Special Guest of Honour at this year’s Ghana Navy Memorial Day celebration, which also marked the 35th anniversary of the attack on Ghana Navy Ship Yogaga.

The solemn ceremony, held at the Western Naval Command Cenotaph, featured a parade and wreath-laying in memory of the fallen.

In her address, the Vice President—who also serves as Chairperson of the Ghana Armed Forces Council—underscored the importance of the commemoration, noting that it preserves a tradition of vigilance while reminding the nation of the sacrifices made by its servicemen and women.

“This year’s theme is both apt and timely, particularly in light of the recent helicopter tragedy.

On this day, the Ghana Navy and the entire nation stand in solidarity with the families of the fallen,” she said.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also emphasised the critical role of maritime security, calling on the Navy to continue working closely with other security agencies to defend Ghana’s territorial sovereignty, protect its waters, and safeguard national interests.

She commended the active participation of young people in the ceremony, describing their presence as vital in helping them appreciate the true cost of peace, the weight of responsibility, and Ghana’s enduring commitment to democracy.

She urged the nation to draw from historical experiences to inspire future generations to uphold the values of service, sacrifice, and patriotism.
