Ghana to host electric vehicle assembly plant through partnership with Chinese firm
Ghana is set to become a hub for electric vehicle (EV) assembly in West Africa following a new investment deal with Shenzhen New Geco of China.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Agribusiness confirmed that the company has acquired land in Ghana and that development of the EV assembly plant is already well advanced.
The announcement was made by Minister Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare during her Government Accountability Series appearance today, Wednesday, January 21, 2026.
She said the project is part of Ghana’s broader strategy to accelerate industrial transformation, create jobs, and drive sustainable economic growth.
“Policy drives investment,” the minister noted, adding that the initiative complements other government efforts to boost industrialisation, value addition, and employment creation.
The ministry is also reviewing the Ghana Automotive Development Policy to accommodate electric vehicles as well as two- and three-wheeler transport systems, signaling a long-term commitment to modernising the country’s automotive sector.
Minister Ofosu Agyare highlighted that these developments, alongside completed draft policies for key sectors such as pharmaceuticals, textiles, garments, and special economic zones, are designed to attract both local and foreign investors to Ghana.
The EV assembly project is expected to generate employment, support technological transfer, and strengthen Ghana’s industrial capacity, reinforcing the country’s ambitions as a regional manufacturing and innovation hub.
