Ghana has taken a major step forward in the global fight against cybercrime as Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Hon. Sam George, represented His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, at the signing ceremony and high-level conference of the United Nations Convention Against Cybercrime held in Hanoi, Vietnam, Last week

The historic event brought together global leaders, policymakers, and cybersecurity experts to strengthen international cooperation in combating the rising threat of cybercrime and the exploitation of digital spaces by malicious actors targeting individuals, institutions, and nations.

Mr. Sam George described Ghana’s participation as “a bold and strategic step toward safeguarding the country’s digital ecosystem and reinforcing Africa’s role in shaping the global cybersecurity agenda.”

“This marks the boldest step yet in our collective fight against cybercrime and the misuse of cyberspace.

Ghana is fully committed to working with the global community to ensure a secure and trusted digital environment,” the Minister stated.

Following Ghana’s endorsement of the Convention, the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations announced plans to initiate the necessary processes to lay the Convention before Parliament for ratification in 2026.

Once ratified, the Convention will strengthen Ghana’s legal framework for addressing cyber threats, enhance international collaboration, and protect citizens, businesses, and government institutions from digital attacks.

The UN Convention Against Cybercrime is a landmark international treaty designed to harmonise global efforts in preventing, investigating, and prosecuting cyber offences while ensuring respect for human rights and data protection.

Ghana’s active participation underscores the government’s determination to build a secure, resilient, and inclusive digital future.
