2026 Commonwealth Games: Abdul Wahib Omar opens Team Ghana's boxing campaign
Ghana's boxing campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games gets underway on Friday, July 24, with experienced boxer Abdul Wahib Omar set to become the first Ghanaian to step into the ring in Glasgow.
Omar will face England's Patris Mughalzai in the men's 65kg preliminary round at 6:45 p.m. at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC), Hall 5, as Team Ghana begins its quest for medals in one of the country's strongest sporting disciplines.
The 32-year old will spearhead a 10-member Ghanaian boxing team with the Black Bombers and Black Hitters hoping to continue Ghana's rich history of success at the Commonwealth Games.
Friday's contest will mark Omar's second appearance at the Games after making his debut in Birmingham 2022, where he impressed by winning a bronze medal.
His run to the semi-finals ended with a defeat to Richarno Colin of Mauritius, but the performance cemented his status as one of Ghana's leading amateur boxers.
Armed with that experience, Omar heads into Glasgow aiming to improve on his previous outing as he takes on the 24-year old Mughalzai in what is expected to be a closely contested opening bout.
After Omar's fight, Amadu Mohammed will become the next Ghanaian boxer in action when he enters the men's 55kg competition on Sunday.
Amadu has been handed a bye into the Round of 16 and will meet the winner of the preliminary-round contest between England's Thomas Teers and Eriu Temakau.
Ghana's boxing team will be looking to make an early statement in Glasgow as it targets another successful Commonwealth Games campaign with hopes of adding to the country's long-standing medal tradition in the Sport.
