African boxing legend Azumah Nelson is expected to once again receive a World Boxing Council (WBC) award.

This will take place during a mega fight show in Accra as part of the WBC's The Year of Africa celebrations.

Hosted by Legacy Rise Sports Promotions, owned by President John Mahama’s son Sharaf Mahama, and Amir Khan Promotions, the event will take place at the Bukom Boxing Arena on June 13, 2025. The significance of the date is it marks 21 years since Azumah Nelson became the first African to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2004.

Zoom Zoom Nelson, as he is affectionately called, will be honoured for his famed boxing career and illustrious achievements.

In December 1984, Azumah first won the WBC featherweight world title, via besting Wilfredo Gomez in Puerto Rico. He retained the title until 1988, moving up to bag the super featherweight title, winning it twice and keeping it till 1997. 

Considered the greatest African boxer of all time, Amumah, 66, reigned as a world champion for over a decade.

Meanwhile, in February, the maiden ABU/WBC Amateur Boxing tournament for African countries took place in Lagos, Nigeria.
